Network position and what it does not mean

Every number in this section is computed on the graph as published and is never adjusted for a case. The parameters are stated on the method page so that a reader with the dataset can reproduce them exactly.

The two graphs

The full graph carries every relation. The industrial relations subgraph carries only the relations in the industrial production and service family and drops ownership, property, legal designation, public finance, commercial disclosure, research and person relations. Commercial disclosure links remain in the full graph but are excluded from the industrial relations subgraph and from its observed only variant. A node that is central on the full graph because it convenes institutions falls away on the industrial graph, which is the point of running both.

Betweenness measures brokerage: how often a node sits on the shortest path between two others. It is structure, not importance and not output.

The published industrial subgraph includes documented announced relations as well as observed operating relations. Its rankings describe the published structure at the cutoff, not only currently operating production flows. The observed only column drops the 7 prospective industrial relations: those whose relation is planned or developmental, and those that touch an announced node.

The values are small because the industrial subgraph is sparse: 48 of 147 edges. A sparse graph produces low normalized betweenness, and the ranking rather than the magnitude is what the table carries.
